Yesterday I attended a beautiful ‘farewell’ afternoon tea at the gorgeous Queen Victoria Building in Sydney, to say goodbye to the talented Linsay Knight, children’s publisher of Random House Aus., and to wish her well in her retirement. Linsay picked my mss from the slush pile more than 10 years ago (Shalott), and has been a friend, mentor and champion ever since. Judging from the huge crowd of authors, agents, book sellers and sundry others all associated with the children’s book industry who attended to pay tribute to her, Linsay has made her mark and will be greatly missed. It was something of a sad afternoon, the end of an era, but a fitting tribute to someone who has contributed so much to the world of children’s literature. She says she’ll stay involved in the world of children’s books, and I certainly hope she will, and that her wisdom, experience and expertise will not be lost to us.
